Toronto, ONSeeking Full-time Financial Analyst

Yahya Balikci

Third-Year Finance & Accounting Student, Schulich School of Business

I have owned the finance function of a Toronto contracting business for three years, building its bookkeeping and job-costing systems from scratch in Excel. Alongside that, I build three-statement models and DCF valuations. I am looking for a full-time Financial Analyst role, and my longer-term interest is venture capital.

IAbout

A finance student who has already run a finance function.

I am a third-year BBA student at the Schulich School of Business at York University, specializing in Finance & Accounting. Since June 2023 I have been the Finance Manager at Otto Deck & Fence, a Toronto contracting business, where I built the bookkeeping system in Excel from scratch and coded all assets, liabilities, and expenses into a monthly profit and loss statement.

That role has meant doing the whole job rather than one slice of it: building a job-costing model that measures margin on every individual project, managing billing and receivables end to end, quoting clients, and coordinating crews and subcontractors. Over three years I drove capital allocation decisions that helped produce over six figures in total revenue, including liquidating underutilized assets and redeploying the proceeds into operations to close a short-term cash flow gap in under a month.

In parallel I have built three-statement models and DCF valuations with a WACC derived from CAPM, along with trading and transaction comps. I also consult pro bono for non-profits and social enterprises through 180 Degrees Consulting, and I run external relations for The Networking Club at Schulich.

I am looking for a full-time Financial Analyst role. Longer term, I want to break into venture capital.

IIFocus Areas

Where my work concentrates

The technical ground I have covered, through the family business, coursework, and consulting engagements.

  • Valuation & Modelling

Three-statement models with linked statements, and DCF valuations built with a WACC derived from CAPM, including deriving beta, and a terminal value.

  • Comparable Company Analysis

Trading and transaction comps, used alongside intrinsic valuation to frame a range rather than a single number.

  • Forecasting & Sensitivity

Revenue forecasts built off smoothed historical results instead of a flat growth assumption, with sensitivity analysis run across discount rate and terminal growth.

  • Excel

XLOOKUP and INDEX-MATCH, pivot tables, and data tables for sensitivity analysis. Monthly P&L built from raw transactions.

  • Accounting & Bookkeeping

Coding assets, liabilities, and expenses into a monthly P&L. QuickBooks, and job-costing systems built from scratch.

  • Tools & Languages

SQL and PowerPoint, comfortable with Bloomberg, and some exposure to Python. Bilingual in English and Turkish.

IIISelected Work

Selected work

Three pieces of work where I owned the analysis end to end.

01Otto Deck & Fence · Capital allocation

Outboard Motor Resale

Identified underutilized capital sitting in previous business investments and redeployed it into a resale opportunity, buying a lot of outboard motors at North Toronto Auction — 45 units in total, including four 300hp Mercury Verado engines alongside smaller units.

Built an Excel tracker covering inventory, cost basis, asking price, and margin per unit, then built a dealer call list spanning Ontario and worked it directly.

The position generated over $30,000 in additional revenue for the business and closed a short-term cash flow gap in under a month.
